Secret to money happiness revealed

A new survey suggests that two in five Brits would decide whether to continue a relationship depending on the financial situation of their partner.

Women are more influenced by the state of their partner’s finances than men, with just under half of women admitting this would be a factor in continuing a relationship compared with fewer than one in three men, according to the MoneySupermarket research.

Problems with debt play a key role when it comes to relationships. Two in five people said they would base their decision of continuing to date their partner on this, while one in three does not trust those in debt and half found debt off-putting.

The research, based on the findings of an online survey of 2,010 UK adults aged over 18, also found that one in ten Brits likes to keep their financial situation close to their chest and never reveals the state of their finances to their partners. One in five Brits have kept money hidden from a partner either in a secret account or at home, away from their loved one.

However, some Brits are much more honest and open, with one in five declaring how solvent they are within a month of meeting a love interest.
